In a support group, members provide each other with various types of help, usually nonprofessional and nonmaterial, for a particular shared, usually burdensome, characteristic. The help may take the form of providing and evaluating relevant information, relating personal experiences, listening to and accepting others' experiences, providing sympathetic understanding and establishing social networks. A support group may also work to inform the public or engage in advocacy.

History

Formal support groups may appear to be a modern phenomenon, but they supplement traditional fraternal organizations such as Freemasonry in some respects, and may build on certain supportive functions (formerly) carried out in (extended) families.

Other types of groups formed to support causes, including causes outside of themselves, are more often called advocacy groups, interest groups, lobby groups, pressure groups or promotional groups. Trade unions and many environmental groups, for example, are interest groups. The term support group in this article refers to peer-to-peer support.

Maintaining contact

Support groups maintain interpersonal contact among their members in a variety of ways. Traditionally, groups have met in person in sizes that allowed conversational interaction. Support groups also maintain contact through printed newsletters, telephone chains, internet forums, and mailing lists. Some support groups are exclusively online (see below).

Membership in some support groups is formally controlled, with admission requirements and membership fees. Other groups are "open" and allow anyone to attend an advertised meeting, for example, or to participate in an online forum.

Are there any support groups for severe somatic illness online?
Q. I have severe psychosomatic illness. I see a therapist but it's only every other week and I'd like to get some support other than that. I can't seem to find any online support groups for severe somatic illness. Do you know any?

Are there support groups for families of someone on sex offenders registry?
Q. A family member is on probation and now registered on the sex offenders registry. It is a "romeo/juliet" type situation. Single offense. NO history. NO violence. NO danger to children/others, etc. But he and family must bear the same restrictions as if was a predator. Anyway. With no experience w/such things, are there support groups for families where you can get help and advice on how to cope with the restrictions, etc? Because family members are greatly affected, as well as the one person. Thank you.

A. The "Sex offender" witch-hunt is arguably the most shameful and barbaric and bizarre outrage of the 20th (and now the 21std) century. The very idea that people who kidnap and torture and murder little children and then eat them for breakfast should legally be treated as more or less the same as people who consensually make love with each other even though they are not ""legally entitled" to touch each other's bodies, is one of the formost reasons that "The Law" is nowadays regarded by so many people with such utter contempt. I myself have never been charged with any "sex crime," but techically I should be considered a reprobate because I once failed to report a girlfriend to the authorities, even though she legally "raped" me on several… [cont.]

What are some good website/support groups for widowers?
Q. I recently lost my father quite suddenly. My mother is 57 and was married to him for 37 years. She resides in Indiana and is struggling to move on both emotionally and financially. Are there any good sites that she can interact with others that are facing the same dilemmias as her? If there are any support groups in central indiana that would be great too. Thanks.
