Substance abuse, also known as drug abuse, refers to a maladaptive pattern of use of a substance that is not considered dependent. The term "drug abuse" does not exclude dependency, but is otherwise used in a similar manner in nonmedical contexts. The terms have a huge range of definitions related to taking a psychoactive drug or performance enhancing drug for a non-therapeutic or non-medical effect. All of these definitions imply a negative judgment of the drug use in question (compare with the term responsible drug use for alternative views). Some of the drugs most often associated with this term include alcohol, amphetamines, barbiturates, benzodiazepines, cocaine, methaqualone, and opioids. Use of these drugs may lead to criminal penalty in addition to possible physical, social, and psychological harm, both strongly depending on local jurisdiction. Other definitions of drug abuse fall into four main categories: public health definitions, mass communication and vernacular usage, medical definitions, and political and criminal justice definitions. Worldwide, the UN estimates there are more than 50 million regular users of heroin, cocaine and synthetic drugs. Substance abuse is a form of substance-related disorder. Answered by beatrice c - Thu Sep 6 02:44:07 2007 How will I get to find substance abuse treatment centers in Lincolndale, New York? Q. I need to do this for my friend. Among the two of us, she has always been the more responsible one. She looked after me as if I was her little sister. Ever since her boyfriend broke up with her, though, things changed. I would often find her slumped on her bed whenever I visit her house. She hid it from us, but she has also been indulging in alcoholic beverages as well. I sat beside her all day yesterday. We reminisced and cried, and she finally agreed to get herself treated for her alcohol addiction. This is why I need to find substance abuse treatment centers. Any help will be surely appreciated. It's a good thing that she has already realized that she's not doing herself a favor by indulging in alcohol. Just keep on being there for her as your moral support and encouragement would surely make a lot of difference. As for treatment centers, the links below will help you in finding them. You can also ask your friend's parents to take her to a hospital so she can get checked up on by a doctor. The doctor will then be able to tell your friend what kind of treatment program she should undergo as well as which treatment center will get to provide her with this kind of treatment. Good luck! Q. When i get older i want to go to college to be a substance abuse counselor. I want to know what classes i should take in high school and some colleges in michigan that would be best for me. Asked by Tricia - Wed Nov 5 21:56:34 2008 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments A. I have no idea about schools in Michigan, but a few of my friends went to college to become substance abuse counselors. They did horribly in high school and barely graduated and they got accepted into the program no problem. The program was pretty intensive and tough but had people from all walks of life of all backgrounds, educations and ages. I don't think it really matters what you take during high school, since there aren't any real 'counselling' courses in high school. Is there a peer counselling program at your school where older students help support younger students? If there is, maybe help out with that. Also, you could volunteer for some organization which helps recovering drug addicts of various ages. That would look really… [cont.] Answered by Diamond-Raven - Thu Nov 6 05:47:14 2008 From Yahoo Answer Search: "Substance Abuse" Child Protection Register figure above national average - Scotland Courier
