In a support group, members provide each other with various types of help, usually nonprofessional and nonmaterial, for a particular shared, usually burdensome, characteristic. The help may take the form of providing and evaluating relevant information, relating personal experiences, listening to and accepting others' experiences, providing sympathetic understanding and establishing social networks. A support group may also work to inform the public or engage in advocacy. HistoryFormal support groups may appear to be a modern phenomenon, but they supplement traditional fraternal organizations such as Freemasonry in some respects, and may build on certain supportive functions (formerly) carried out in (extended) families. Other types of groups formed to support causes, including causes outside of themselves, are more often called advocacy groups, interest groups, lobby groups, pressure groups or promotional groups. Trade unions and many environmental groups, for example, are interest groups. The term support group in this article refers to peer-to-peer support. Maintaining contactSupport groups maintain interpersonal contact among their members in a variety of ways. Traditionally, groups have met in person in sizes that allowed conversational interaction. Support groups also maintain contact through printed newsletters, telephone chains, internet forums, and mailing lists. Some support groups are exclusively online (see below). Membership in some support groups is formally controlled, with admission requirements and membership fees. Other groups are "open" and allow anyone to attend an advertised meeting, for example, or to participate in an online forum. From Wikipedia under the
GNU Free Documentation License How do I find a local support groups for unemployed persons, not 40+ or groups that charge membership fees? Q. I'm 48 years old & unemployed. I could really benefit from the support that might be found from others in my situation. What is the fastest & most effective way to locate such groups in my area, which is Washington, DC? As I stated above, I am NOT interested in 40+ or groups that charge membership fees. But any other suggestions would be welcome. I went to one when I first moved to the Midwest and chatted with the person leading the group and he put me in touch with some organizations that helped me network to a job. Also, you can try the unemployment site for your area. Ours has a group that meets regularly to help network. Do you go to church? There might be a group in your church - or maybe you could start one. Finally, grab the local paper. The business sections usually list events for the week and many times there are networking opportunities in there. If they are not free, they generally let you sit in on one or two meetings for free - which would 'buy' you enough time to see if the group is your style. … [cont.] Answered by cam can help - Fri Aug 29 22:04:12 2008 Online support groups for parents with children with mental problems? Q. I am looking for online support groups for parents that have children that have been diagnosed with severe mental problems. I cannot seem to find any online help groups. I'm sure that they are out there, but haven't had any luck finding them. ADHD, OCD, psychotic tendencies, kleptomania, etc. Anyone out there know of any good sites or maybe you are going through the same problems? Asked by dragonfly - Fri Sep 21 10:27:32 2007 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments A. You know, I've been looking for something similar because there is something seriously wrong with my step-daughter. She was diagnosed 2 years ago with ADHD, but now she has breakdowns and she has been having sexual "visions" and "visions" about death and suicide. She starts seeing a therapist next week and I hope they do a mental health assessment on her and check her thyroid levels. The girl is only 10 and she shouldn't be having thoughts about these type of things.
