A twelve-step program is a set of guiding principles outlining a course of action for recovery from addiction, compulsion, or other behavioral problems. Originally proposed by Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) as a method of recovery from alcoholism, the Twelve Steps were first published in the book, Alcoholics Anonymous: The Story of How More Than One Hundred Men Have Recovered From Alcoholism in 1939. The method was then adapted and became the foundation of other twelve-step programs such as Narcotics Anonymous, Cocaine Anonymous, Overeaters Anonymous, Co-Dependents Anonymous and Debtors Anonymous. Having worked in the field of detox and recovery I have come to believe that the term disease is a generic term that basically means a physical and mental addiction so strong that it manifests itself in the brain (which is why it can be traced in CAT scans) and seems overwhelming to anyone trapped in it. It can be thought of as a mental disorder, due to the fact that the mind believes that the substance is necessary for day to day living, just to survive, when in fact, that substance is killing them. Q. I woke up and immediately took the Equate hpt. Negative. 20 minutes later (could barely go...) positve! I think, I may have flooded the first...not sure what happened there. But, the second one blew me away because in just a few minutes (4-6) it was positive!? I'm an addict and probably need to join a twelve step program huh?
