Would you say a gambling addiction is as bad as a drug addiction?
Q. I would, a drug addiction other than public feelings towards you affects you only. A gambling addiction on the other hand, although does not affect you physically, affects you and your family financially.

A. Unfortunately, any addiction can be crippling to a family. No addiction is any "better" than an other. Most family members are surprised and confused by any addiction and feel that they are unable to help. Ultimately, an addiction can ruin a person's life and thier family along with it. If you recognise that one of your family has any kind of addiction, it's up to you to try and get some kind of help, as the person with the addiction, rarely thinks that anything is wrong..

Does drinking coffee replace or lessen the addiction of drinking alcohol in alcoholics?
Q. Does drinking coffee help reduce the addiction or daily cravings of alcohol. Can one develops an addiction to coffee? (from the caffeine) Will the coffee addiction ever have a chance of switching over from alcohol to coffee? This is for a research paper on an experimental analysis of behavior treatment.

A. The act of drinking coffee will not replace the craving for alcohol and it will not lessen it. Addiction is the unrelenting physical and mental need for a mind altering substance or high. An alcoholic in recovery has to be vigilant about not cross addicting, which is what you are touching on. And coffee, in large amounts, is a stimulant. So is tobacco, which is why so many addicts smoke. Addicts that gravitate toward 'stimulants', like coke or meth, diet pills, etc can take off with coffee or energy drinks. Also, any addict can cross addict to a whole different area, like gambling, sex, video games... It's the mind going to unhealthy amounts of something to escape. Bottom line. If someone is 'addicted' to caffeine (and I wonder… [cont.]

What are the chances of overcoming drug addiction if you work in a pharmacy?
Q. Do you HAVE to leave that field in order to recover from a pill addiction (where you were stealing pills before and got caught) or is there some way to not lose your career despite being in a place with that much temptation? Has this happened to anyone else? Anyone have any good ideas how to approach this?

A. I happen to know about this a bit, from my work with people with professional careers and addiction. It is a tough road, indeed. It takes dedication and some very good support from friends, family and colleagues, as well as in recovery groups or meetings. Also helpful for many is use of opiate blockers, such as Naltrexone or Suboxone (which has some opiate action but is believed to cut cravings). One should be honest with oneself, and a good break from pharmacy between period of acting out and returning is probably a good idea, even despite a loss of income.
