Adoption is a process whereby a person assumes the parenting for another who is not kin and, in so doing, permanently transfers all rights and responsibilities from the original parent or parents. Unlike guardianship or other systems designed for the care of the young, adoption is intended to effect a permanent change in status and as such requires societal recognition, either through legal or religious sanction. Historically some societies have enacted specific laws governing adoption whereas others have endeavored to achieve adoption through less formal means, notably via contracts that specified inheritance rights and parental responsibilities. Modern systems of adoption, arising in the 20th century, tend to be governed by comprehensive statutes and regulations. Adoption has a long history in the Western world, closely tied with the legacy of the Roman Empire and the Catholic Church. Its use has changed considerably over the centuries with its focus shifting from adult adoption and inheritance issues toward children and family creation and its structure moving from a recognition of continuity between the adopted and kin toward allowing relationships of lessened intensity. GNU Free Documentation License What do adult adoptees think of open adoption? Would that have made a difference in your life? Q. So many of the adoptees here have issues because they had no information or contact with their first parents. Would it have been better if they had still been around, just not raising you? Asked by Sharon M - Tue Sep 30 17:30:42 2008 - - 10 Answers - 0 Comments A. Yes. Most definitely. Please see the following entry I wrote about this issue: Answered by unknown - Tue Sep 30 22:10:39 2008 Do some adoptees have a double standard when it comes to how they feel about their adoption? Q. All adoptees (rightly) demand respect for their feelings of hurt, abandonment and loss - then in the same breath disrespect other adoptee's feelings of peace, happiness and security... Seems like a double standard to me. What are your thoughts? OH! OK I think I see the distinction. Those happy adoptees HAVE experienced the negative emotions, but for whatever reason down play their importance. Did I get it? Asked by Allanas - Sun Apr 25 16:39:56 2010 - - 8 Answers - 0 Comments A. Allanas, it's not disrespecting adopted person's feelings of peace at all. However, it is very very hurtful if a person claims that there are no harmful effects of a child being abandoned by their own parent. It is impossible for an adopted person to not suffer any effects of being abandoned by their natural parent. So if an adopted child comes on here discounting the feelings of other adopted ones then it is very offensive. Answered by No it isn't. - Sun Apr 25 16:53:19 2010 Are adoptees treated the same as biological children?
Q. I have read in answers from time to time how adoptive families tell an adoptee that they are part of the family but when they die they are leaving their heirlooms to "real" family members? So my question is: Is this how most/some adoptees are treated are is this abnormal? Personally yes I would leave heirlooms to an adopted child or adopted grandchild as they are family. I have a sense of being fair. Asked by parenting is an option II - Fri Jun 19 22:22:15 2009 - - 18 Answers - 0 Comments A. My adopted mom passed away on Monday. She "unadopted" me 12 years ago (leaving the message on my voice mail) when my a.dad died. At one point, there was a will and I was in it. I'm sure my name was taken out shortly after my dad died. But really, that's OK with me. My sister (her biological daughter) took care of her the past few years and she deserves whatever she may inherit. She had biological children and although she told me she "picked" me, those words were meaningless. Or rather, she "picked" me to be the the focal point of her anger & bitterness. The scapegoat of the family. The saddest thing for me is that not only did she not accept me as her daughter, but she very obviously never accepted my children as her grandchildren.… [cont.] Answered by Robin - Fri Jun 19 23:06:06 2009 From Yahoo Answer Search: "adoptees" Saramkwa saram deul (1994, KBS TV)
