From Wiktionary under the GNU Free Documentation License. Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) is an international mutual aid movement claiming more than 2 million members and declaring its "primary purpose is to stay sober and help other alcoholics achieve sobriety". AA was founded in 1935 by Bill Wilson and Dr. Bob Smith (Bill W. and Dr. Bob) in Akron, Ohio. Along with other early members, Wilson and Smith developed AA's program of spiritual and character development, the Twelve Steps. The Twelve Traditions are AA's recommendations for its groups, stressing anonymity, altruism, and inclusion of all who want to stop drinking. The Traditions also recommend that AA groups try to steer clear of dogma, affiliation with other entities, internal governing hierarchies and involvement in public issues. Subsequent fellowships, such as Narcotics Anonymous, have adapted the Twelve Steps and the Twelve Traditions. Protestant-only until a Catholic joined in 1939, AA membership has since grown and spread "across diverse cultures holding different beliefs and values", including geopolitical areas resistant to grassroot movements. Although AA views discussions on the medical nature of alcoholism as beyond its scope, AA is regarded as a proponent and popularizer of the disease theory of alcoholism. The American Psychiatric Association has recommended sustained treatment in conjunction with AA's program, or similar community resources, for chronic alcoholics unresponsive to brief treatment. AA's own data state that 64% drop out of AA in their first year, but its program is credited with helping many alcoholics achieve and maintain sobriety. AA's name derived from its first book titled Alcoholics Anonymous: The Story of How More Than One Hundred Men Have Recovered From Alcoholism (The subtitle was later updated to say "...Many Thousands of Men and Women...") Informally called "the Big Book", it describes AA's program, details its early history, and contains brief autobiographical sketches of AA members. From Wikipedia under the
GNU Free Documentation License How do I use an Alcoholics Anonymous sponsor as a professional reference? Q. I'm a recent college graduate searching out my entry level job as a preschool teacher or private school teacher. I've also been sober for 2 years in Alcoholics Anonymous. My sponsor has offered to be one of my references on my applications for employment but every time it asks "Relationship" I don't know what to put her as without giving away my anonymity. Does anyone know how to do this?? Asked by Crys - Wed Jun 17 14:53:11 2009 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments A. I'd suggest asking your sponsor if you could do some work for them --housework, yardwork, ect. And then you could say for applying that this person is a family friend who has paid you for odd jobs. Q. She is a brilliant girl when sober, but glass in hand she is a fall-down drunk everyday who blacks out and says and does the worst things while drunk or blacked-out. She is a chain smoker too and I fear she is going to light herself on fire on of these times, or fall out her 3rd story balcony, or worse. Asked by Spaced Frehley - Fri Aug 6 18:42:38 2010 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments A. You can't convince any addict to go to rehab. Especially if they are in denial or just are not ready to get help, if they are not ready to change yet. But what you can do; is start pointing out to her the deffinition of an addict. It would probably shock her if you video recorded some of these episodes and at a time when she is sober and normal, play them back to her and tell her, SEE, see why you need help, do you see what you are doing, you are killing yourself and everyone else who has to watch you go through this is suffering too!! And then finally tell her that if she does not start making changes that you are gone because you will not put yourself through anymore pain watching her like that anymore. Tell her that you hate who she… [cont.] Answered by Dolphinmarine - Fri Aug 6 19:03:09 2010 From Yahoo Answer Search: "alcoholics anonymous" Finding hope, inspiration - Hattiesburg American
