Alcoholism is a term with multiple and sometimes conflicting definitions to refer to the consumption of alcoholic beverages. In common and historic usage, alcoholism refers to any condition that results in the continued consumption of alcoholic beverages, despite health problems and negative social consequences. Modern medical definitions describe alcoholism as a disease and addiction which results in a persistent use of alcohol despite negative consequences. In the 19th and early 20th centuries, alcoholism, also referred to as dipsomania described a preoccupation with, or compulsion toward the consumption of, alcohol and/or an impaired ability to recognize the negative effects of excessive alcohol consumption.

Although not all of these definitions specify current and on-going use of alcohol as a qualifier for alcoholism, some do, as well as remarking on the long-term effects of consistent, heavy alcohol use, including dependence and symptoms of withdrawal.

While the ingestion of alcohol is, by definition, necessary to develop alcoholism, the use of alcohol does not predict the development of alcoholism. It is estimated that 9% of the general population is predisposed to alcoholism based on genetic factors. The quantity, frequency and regularity of alcohol consumption required to develop alcoholism varies greatly from person to person. In addition, although the biological mechanisms underpinning alcoholism are uncertain, some risk factors, including social environment, stress, emotional health, genetic predisposition, age, and gender have been identified. For example, those who consume alcohol at an early age, by age 16 or younger, are at a higher risk of alcohol dependence or abuse. Also, studies indicate that the proportion of men with alcohol dependence are higher than that of the proportion of women, 7% and 2.5% respectively, although women are more vulnerable to long-term consequences of alcoholism. Around 90% of adults in United States consume alcohol and more than 700,000 of them are treated daily for alcoholism. Professor David Zaridze, who led the international research team, calculated that alcohol had killed three million Russians since 1987.

Does a person with alcoholism in their genes have a chance of drinking normally?
Q. If a man has a high percentage of blood relatives with alcoholism, does this mean he is more likely to misuse alcohol due to genetic faults or through learned behaviour, or is it a self fulfilling prophecy?

A. We have alcoholism in the family. I stay away from alcohol completely. I realized a long time ago there are some families who are more sensitive to such things as alcohol and feel there is a huge chance that I could wined up a alcoholic. If we do not know are history how then can we know are future... There are whole races of people that are very sensitive to such drugs. It is just the way it is. People joke about it, make holidays out of it but there is a reason for such jokes and holidays. Some people make alcohol in there system by eating certain foods. We had a old rancher we know who ate pasta at a restaurant in the bigger town and he stopped at are place for he was throwing up drunk!! He is in his 70's and he does not drink alcohol… [cont.]

A. Sweetie, you can't help him unless you have been through it yourself. He needs to go to an alcohol treatment center or to at least AA meetings. He also has to do it for himself, not because you want him to. I would start calling the local hospitals and start getting some info on where he can go. Also, he can get really sick from detoxing so he needs to be under a doctors care for that. At the very least he needs to talk to his doctor and find out how and what to do. Good luck and God bless.
