How different do you think America would be had the Dutch prevailed as a world superpower?

A. Well, really, this would have been so-o-o unlikely. The Dutch were a major power only commercially, not militarily -- it's inconceivable to me that they could have defeated the English in New York. In fact, while those Dutch ships were out there the nation was struggling just to prevent Louis XIV from completely taking it over. I'd say that if there was a another western European power for the English to contend with at the time, it was the French. But if the impossible had occurred, then Frank Sinatra's big hit would have been called "New Amsterdam, New Amsterdam"! Wouldn't have quite had the same ring to it.

What are some visual signs in German and Dutch which show the difference between the two?
Q. Generally I can see any language and tell you what language it is but I always get stumped on Dutch vs German. Are there any things I can look for to help tell the difference in writing?

A. The Germans use capital letters for their nouns. In Dutch capital letters are only used at the beginning of a sentence, and in names and citynames. Dutch also doesnt use umluats (the two dots above a letter) Edit: Fist answer is correct, except for the ''Dutch uses sj and tsj'' that is not true for written Dutch

Anyone know how to make a Dutch pastry (coffee cake) with crystalized ginger?
Q. I knew a Dutch woman who made the most amazing pastry-coffee cake type of dish using crystalized ginger. She said it was a typical Dutch dish, but I've not been able to find the recipe and have lost touch with her. Anyone ever heard of this? I'm dying to make it and eat it again!
