Overeaters Anonymous (OA) is a twelve-step program for people with problems related to food including, but not limited to, compulsive overeaters, those with binge eating disorder, bulimics and anorexics. Anyone with a problematic relationship with food is welcomed, as OA's Third Tradition states that the only requirement for memberships is a desire to stop eating compulsively. OA was founded by Rozanne S. and two other women in January, 1960. The organization's headquarters, or World Service Office, are located in Rio Rancho, New Mexico. Overeaters Anonymous estimates its membership at 54,000 people in 6,500 groups meeting in over 75 countries. OA has developed its own literature specifically for those who eat compulsively but also uses the Alcoholics Anonymous books Alcoholics Anonymous and Twelve Steps and Twelve Traditions. The First Step of OA begins with the admission of powerlessness over food, the next eleven steps are intended to bring members "physical, emotional, and spiritual healing." From Wikipedia under the

I was wondering your opinions on this and whether or not you feel it is a good support group? I don't want it as a weight loss program. I just want to be around people who understand what I am going through. No one else in my family has my food issues so really no one to relate to. Asked by butterflykisses427 - Wed Oct 18 14:41:52 2006 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments A. My aunt joined it. She lost a lot of weight, looked great, and seemed happier. This was about 3 years ago. Since then, she has gained back a lot of weight, but is still not obese or anything, and she still seems to be a lot more at peace with herself and with food. I've reccomended it to a close friend with eating issues, but I am not sure if she tried it. I would reccomend it in general more if you feel that the way you relate to food is out of balance than if you just want to lose weight; for that: weight watchers! I haven't been to OA, but I have gone to another 12 step group. She should think about and decide (you too if you go) if you want to identify yourself as an "addict" or not because everyone else will. If you aren't comfortable with doing so, you don't have to. You want what you say to come from the heart, so don't be afraid of standing out and appearing different from other people. They'll be fine with it. No one will push you to do anything you don't want to do. At least, they shouldn't. (I've used "you" to refer to your sister from here on out. It's easier that way.) There is an OA book, I believe, like a manual, you can buy. Try searching the web or Amazon. It may be good to look at before you go to a meeting. Q. I think my friend is a binge eater. Whenever her or her friend get depressed, they say, "I need cake. I need chocolate", or they say, "I ate a whole bunch of stuff today cause I can't stop thinking about him"...and they talk about eating the most random stuff...and its upsetting me because they told me they do not binge, but my friends mother was in overeaters anonymous! could my friend be a binge eater? what do i do? Asked by Starchild - Wed Mar 5 21:50:13 2008 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments A. Well, there is a reason they call cake, candy, chocolate comfort food. Eating these kinds of foods actually secrets this liquid in your brain and relaxes you. So you need to look further into this situation other than just overeating...something is really getting her down to eat like that. Don't confront your friend with the binge eating speech but rather ask her what's bothering her in her life right now and take it from there. I know you mentioned a guy in her life is getting her down. Take her out, meet new people, try and help her get her mind off this guy and you'll see she'll slowly stop eating the way she is once she is happy again. Hope that makes sense.
